Understanding maritime technology
The Coastguard was first formed in 1822, to help stop the illegal smuggling activity along the coast of the United Kingdom. Soon after it was formed, the main activity of the Coastguard turned into Search and Rescue due to the significant loss of life from ships sinking within site of land. In the last 200 years, maritime technology has developed significantly with many different types of equipment and techniques that help keep sailors out of trouble at sea.
